About BankID and personal data

You can verify your identity and sign digitally with BankID. Contact your bank to get a BankID. Only you are allowed to use your BankID. You are not allowed to lend your BankID to anyone else.

When you use BankID, we need to share information about you. This information is called personal data and can, for example, be your name and personal identification number.

Information and data that we receive

When you become a customer of a bank, the bank saves information about you. When you apply for a BankID, the bank sends us information so that we can make a BankID for you.

We have a list of all existing BankIDs. We find out when someone dies, so we can block their BankID. You can also block your BankID yourself. Contact your bank for help.

How we use the data

We only use your data if we need to and if it is legal. We might do so in these cases:

  • When you get a BankID.

  • When you use your BankID.

  • If we have to hand over information about you according to the law.

  • So that we can reduce fraud.

  • If you have said we can use your data.

When you get a BankID

We need the following information to give you a BankID:

  • Your name and personal identity number.

  • The name of the bank you are getting your BankID from.

  • Technical information. 

  • Whether or not you accept notifications

  • The place you are in if you are getting BankID digitally.

  • If there is anything stopping you from having a BankID.

  • If you needed to verify your identity more than once when you got a BankID.

How long the data is saved

The bank saves information about your BankID for 10 years.

When you use BankID

Every time you use your BankID, we need to use the following information:

  • Your name and personal identity number.

  • Which company or authority you used your BankID for.

  • If you verified your identity or signed.

  • Technical information.

  • Which location you are in when you get or use your BankID.

  • Whether or not you needed to verify your identity more than once.

How long the data is saved

The bank saves data on how you use your BankID for 5 years. They save information about:

  • If you verified your identity or signed.

  • Which company or authority you used your BankID for.

  • Technical information.

You can see what information is saved about you. Open the BankID app or program and select 'My history'.

How the data is shared
Your data is shared with the bank, company or authority for which you use your BankID.

When you confirm your identity an extra time

Sometimes you may need to confirm your identity an extra time. Then you use your Swedish passport or national ID card. Sometimes you can use facial recognition instead.

 We use this information:

  • Your approval for using facial recognition.

  • A photo you take of yourself that is compared to the photo on your passport or national ID card.

  • Information about your passport or national ID card.

How long the data is saved

The photo you take of yourself is saved for 72 hours.

How the data is shared

The bank or company is only told that you confirmed your identity an extra time and how you did it. We do not share your photo or any other information about you.

For digital ID card

If you have a digital ID card from us, we save the following data: 

  • Your name, your age and your personal identification number.

  • The photo and information on your passport or national ID card.

  • The date for how long the photo is valid.

How long the data is saved

We save the data for the shortest of these three times:

  1. As long as you have a digital ID card. 

  2. As long as the passport or national ID card you used to activate your digital ID card is valid.

  3. As long as your BankID is valid.

How the data is shared

You can use your digital ID card the same way you would a physical ID document, and you decide when to show it. If you check someone else's digital ID card with your BankID app, that person's personal data and picture will appear on your phone.

To make our services and websites better

We collect information about:

  • How BankID is used.

  • How the websites are used.

  • Technical errors.

We can’t see exact information about you. You can choose to not allow us to collect information about you. You choose that under Settings in the app.

The information we collect is:

  • Information on whether something went wrong.

  • Technical information.

  • How you have used our services or websites.

For most of the information from our websites, we will only save it if you agree. But we will always have to save information that is needed for you to be able to use the website.

How long the data is saved
We save the data for up to 6 months.

How the data is shared
We only share information that doesn’t show who the data belongs to. 

To keep BankID safe

Blocking BankID

If a bank believes that a BankID is being used by the wrong person or in a way that isn’t allowed, the bank must block it. If a BankID is blocked, it can’t be used. The information is saved for 10 years.

Blocking a person from BankID

A bank can block people from having a BankID. This can happen if a person uses BankID in a way that is not allowed. If this happens, other banks can’t give that person a BankID either. Banks share information with each other about those who are not allowed to have a BankID. The data used are:

  • Information that a person is blocked.

How long the data is saved

Information about blocking is saved for 12 months.

Who we share data with

Here you can see who we share your data with. We only share the data if necessary. Or if we have to by law.

  • Companies, banks or authorities that use BankID.

  • Banks that issue BankID.

  • Technical cooperation partners.

Your data is secure

Your personal data is stored in systems that can only be reached by the bank, our employees and companies that need the data. We have many technical ways to protect your data.

What you can do

Contact the bank you got your BankID from if:

  • You want to know what personal data we collect and store about you. You can see what personal data we have saved about you in the BankID app or program, under My History.

  • Your information is wrong and you want to correct it. For example, if you change your name, you need to get a new BankID with the right name.

  • You want us to stop using your personal data. Ask your bank to block your BankID. You can also block your BankID yourself.

  • You can get a digital ID card and take back the consent given to the BankID program.

How your data is saved and shared

We and the bank only save and use your data within the EU/EEA. We don’t send the data to any country outside the EU/EEA. But other companies and organisations you use your BankID at may do so. Therefore, you should also read their privacy policy.
